Part of my get well plan for 2022 is having a plan of the day. Practical strategies can make the difference between getting it done and "blowing off" my workout time. Here are some tips I use to stay on task:
Maintain a calendar and to do list - I somedays feel like I’m a juggler moving between consulting, coaching students, teaching, and my own intentions toward wellness. Maintaining a calendar and to-do list are must do’s to see available workout time and more importantly, to foresee any trouble days where getting a workout in might be a challenge.
Put workout times on the calendar. This way something doesn’t get scheduled and then you’ll be juggling to figure out a time to get in the gym.
Create a repository or suite of workouts. I have a coach Drea Holland, see IG @drea.hollandfitness who creates all the workouts for me. I need someone to design exercise grouping in a way that makes sense. She’s AMAZING!! I access all the routines via an app called Trainerize which includes a profile (my stats), the routines, and then as you do a routine, you enter your stats (reps/weight used) so each time you go to the gym you’re building a history.
Decide if you need a coach. I do - between having the designed workouts and the coaching, I tend to be more accountable and find the encouragement very beneficial. A large part of the battle for me is self-sabotage when it comes to working out - I literally talk myself out of it. Drea is kind, encouraging, and helps me reframe when I start the negative talk.
Implement the plan - this is important. I know people who are superb planners but they never get started. You have to implement, you have to do the work to develop the habit.
