Think of ritual as a ceremony or series of acts repeated in a certain order. An accidental (LOL) ritual is one that we practice without our knowing we are doing so. So it is that during pandemic, hubster and I started a ritual of getting up, getting coffee, sitting outside on the patio and lighting incense. Every day now since March 2020. Rather than a utilitarian purpose, a ritual becomes a way to create time by marking beginnings and endings. Rituals serve to create a rhythm for the day - a structuring if you will, in our case the start and ending of the day. It’s a time to take stock, reflect, forecast, and set our intention for what we will do this day and then at the end of the day reflectively consider how the day unfolded.
Best part of a ritual performed with hubster is the way it creates a bonding experience marking the start and end of the day. Even when we’re not talking we’re experiencing nature together, listening for the sounds of the day and in our stillness we find solitude. It’s a sacred and spiritual experience.
What are the rituals of your day?
