Rituals are important in the way they focus our collective attention. The Super Bowl is an example of an annual event that garners a great deal of conversation - die hards, those who join in the fun, those who watch only for halftime or the commercials and those who don't watch at all. It seems that for a moment we have a singular focus or anti-focus as the case may be. This patterning within our lives helps to build social cohesion and a deeper sense of our interconnectedness. Oh and yea, it provides a good excuse to eat junk food!
